Rock Island Caboose

The Rock Island Lines 29 foot steel framed caboose car was originally built in 1913 as a boxcar and converted in 1940 to a caboose.  It weighs 44800 pounds, is 38 feet from coupler to coupler and 29 feet for the enclosed portion.  It was on last active duty at Lineville, Ia.  It was purchased from a museum in Adair, IA and has been undergoing renovation.

  1. In researching this caboose… was the original number ever determined?
Great to see it so well taken care of!

  2. Nicholas L. Pitsch says:

Do you have the number for this car? I am thinking it is 17777, as I seem to recall the number being stenciled on the frame when I looked at it when it was at Old Threshers in Mt. Pleasant, IA as “The Red Caboose Gift Shop” in 1975 or 1976, prior to its relocation to other places.
